Muse vs Meta AI: Which Meta App Should You Use?
Published 6 min read
Muse vs Meta AI comes down to one question: do you want answers, or do you want a job done?
Meta AI is Meta’s AI assistant, mostly for chat and quick tasks. Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent. It has its own cloud computer and works across your apps and websites in the background.
Both come from Meta, and both run on Meta’s Muse models. But they are separate apps with different jobs.
Muse is one of several new agents. See how it ranks in our guide to the best personal AI agents.
Meta hasn’t published an official comparison of the two. This page uses Meta’s own product pages and help articles as of October 2026.

Muse vs Meta AI: the short answer
Use Meta AI when you want an answer, and use Muse when you want something done. Meta AI is great for questions, writing help and images. Muse is built to take actions, like booking an appointment or buying something, with your approval.
Here’s the simple split, based on Meta’s own descriptions:
- Meta AI: Meta’s AI assistant, mostly for chat and quick tasks. It’s free for everyday use.
- Muse: an agent with its own cloud computer. It works across your apps and websites in the background and asks before sensitive actions.
They are separate apps. On Google Play, they even have different package names. Meta also has separate help articles for reporting problems with each one.
No merger has been announced. Muse is not inside the Meta AI app.
What Meta AI does
Meta AI is Meta’s AI assistant for answering questions, writing, making images and handling quick tasks. You find it at meta.ai, in the Meta AI app, and inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads.
Meta’s Muse Spark post describes these Meta AI modes:
- Instant: fast answers.
- Thinking: more time for hard problems.
- Shopping: searches Marketplace and the wider web for products.
- Voice: talk to it out loud.
Meta AI isn’t chat-only anymore
It’s easy to call Meta AI “just a chatbot,” but that’s no longer quite true. In August 2026, Meta released a free Meta AI app for Mac in beta.
iClarified reported that it can run recurring tasks. It can also share an open window with the assistant and connect to Google Workspace. It works with Facebook and Instagram professional accounts and Meta ads too.
So Meta AI can do some tasks. It just doesn’t run as a full agent on its own computer the way Muse does.
What Muse does that Meta AI can’t
Muse can work for you on its own cloud computer, even after you close the app. It uses your connected apps and websites to get jobs done. Meta calls this computer the Muse Secure VM. VM means virtual machine, a private computer that lives in the cloud.
Here’s what Meta says Muse can do that Meta AI isn’t built for:
- Browse and act on websites. It books appointments, fills out forms and watches for price drops in its own browser.
- Work in the background. It keeps going after you close the app and checks back when it needs you.
- Connect your accounts. Connectors, the links to your other apps, include Gmail, Google Workspace, calendars, Notion and many stores.
- Buy things with your OK. It can check out through Link by Stripe, Shop Pay and PayPal. Every purchase needs your approval.
- Make phone calls. A beta lets it call US businesses for you.
- Work toward goals. A Goals tab tracks bigger plans, like lowering a bill.
Meta’s Muse launch post sums it up. Meta says Muse “doesn’t just answer questions, it actually does the work.”

Do Muse and Meta AI use the same model?
Yes, both run on Meta’s Muse Spark model, but Meta hasn’t said which exact version each app uses today. A model is the AI “brain” under an app.
Muse Spark arrived in Meta AI on April 8, 2026. Meta’s Muse launch post later said the Muse app is “powered by Muse Spark” too.
The apps still feel different. The model is the same family, but Muse adds a cloud computer, a browser, connectors and approvals on top.
What’s coming next differs too. Meta says its bigger Muse Wonder model will “soon” power Muse, subscribers first. Meta’s Wonder post doesn’t mention Meta AI.

Muse vs Meta AI price
Meta AI is free for everyday use. Muse is free with a limit, and its paid plans cost $20 or $100 a month. Here’s how they compare as of October 2026.
| Plan | Muse | Meta AI |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes, with a weekly usage limit | Yes, “free for everyday use” |
| Mid tier | Power: $20/month, 500 million Muse tokens a week | Meta One Core: $7.99/month |
| Top tier | Maximum: $100/month, 3 billion Muse tokens a week | Meta One Premium: $19.99/month |
Muse prices come from Meta’s subscription help page. Tokens are the units Muse uses to measure work.
Meta AI prices come from Meta’s Meta One post. Meta One adds more Meta AI image and video creation, plus extras in Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.
Don’t mix them up. Meta One is a separate subscription. It doesn’t buy you Muse tokens. For Muse plans in detail, see our Meta Muse pricing guide.
Which should you use?

Frequently asked questions
Is Muse replacing Meta AI?
No, not as far as anyone knows. As of October 2026, Meta hasn't announced any plan to merge the two or to replace Meta AI with Muse. They are separate apps with separate store listings and separate help pages. Meta also says Meta AI will stay free for everyday use.
Can I use Muse and Meta AI together?
Yes. They are separate apps, so you can install both. Each one signs in with a Meta account, and Meta's help pages cover Meta AI and Muse under the same account settings. Use Meta AI for quick answers and Muse for longer jobs, like booking or shopping, that need it to act for you.
Is Muse inside the Meta AI app?
No. Muse has its own app, called Muse from Meta, plus the web version at muse.ai and a Mac app. You can also message Muse in WhatsApp. We found no sign that Muse appears inside the Meta AI app as of October 2026. Meta AI lives at meta.ai and in its own app.
