What Is Meta Muse? A Simple Guide to Meta's AI Agent

Published 7 min read

Meta Muse, also called Muse AI, is Meta’s personal AI agent. You tell it what you need in plain words, and it does the work. It can send emails, book travel, fill out forms and shop for you, and it asks before sensitive steps.

Meta launched Muse in the US on September 8, 2026. Meta’s own pitch is that Muse “doesn’t just answer questions, it actually does the work.”

This guide covers what Muse AI is, how it works, how it differs from Meta AI and who it’s for. Want to jump in now? Follow our step-by-step guide on how to use Meta Muse.

What is Meta Muse (Muse AI by Meta)?

Meta Muse, often called Muse AI, is an app from Meta that does tasks for you, not just answers questions. Meta’s Help Center calls it “your personal AI agent that can take actions and get things done with your direction.”

An AI agent is software that plans steps, uses tools and acts for you. A chatbot mostly replies to what you type. Muse can chat too, but its real job is getting things done.

What Muse can do

Meta’s own examples include:

  • Send emails and keep track of school or work messages
  • Book travel and appointments
  • Fill out forms and buy things online, with your approval
  • Turn a saved Instagram recipe reel into a grocery list
  • Plan a dinner party while remembering each guest’s diet
  • Work toward bigger goals, like selling a car for more or lowering a bill

It also has built-in skills for research, documents, images and podcasts. Others cover a morning news digest, scheduled tasks and location reminders. Our Meta Muse features guide covers each one, plus what Muse can’t do.

The names people use

You’ll see it called Meta Muse, Muse AI and “Muse from Meta,” which is the app’s name in the stores. They all mean the same thing. Reuters reported that Meta’s internal codename for it was “Hatch.”

How Meta Muse works as a personal agent

Meta Muse runs on its own computer in the cloud, so it can act even when your phone is off. Meta calls this the Muse Secure VM. It’s a private cloud computer with its own browser, and it holds your agent and your data.

Your agent has its own browser

Because it has a browser, Muse can visit websites the way a person would. It can book appointments, fill in forms and watch for price drops. You can open the browser to watch, take over or stop it.

It keeps working in the background

Muse keeps going after you close the app. It comes back when something changes or when it needs your OK. It can even message you first, and you can turn these check-ins up, down or off.

Connectors, memory and approvals

  • Connectors are links to your other apps, like Gmail, Google Workspace, calendars and Instagram.
  • Memory lets Muse remember details you mention once. You can read and edit its memory files, or tell it to forget something.
  • Approvals keep you in charge. Muse asks before it sends email, and every purchase needs your OK.

A separate safety agent called Sentinel must approve anything Muse sends to the internet. Muse also can’t see your passwords or payment details, says Meta’s security post.

What you see in the app

The app has a Chat tab, side chats, a Goals tab and an Ideas tab with task suggestions. There’s also an activity log, an Upcoming list of scheduled tasks and an avatar you can name and style.

The AI model behind it

Muse runs on Meta’s Muse Spark model. Meta says a bigger model, Muse Wonder, will “soon” power Muse, starting with subscribers. Our guide to Meta’s Muse AI models explains them in plain English.

Meta Muse vs Meta AI: what’s different?

Meta AI is Meta’s AI assistant, mostly for chat and quick tasks. Muse is Meta’s agent that works across your apps and websites for you.

Meta hasn’t published an official comparison of the two. Here’s what we can tell from Meta’s pages and the app stores as of October 2026.

They are separate apps. On Google Play, they even have different package names.

Both use Meta’s Muse family of models. Muse Spark arrived in Meta AI on April 8, 2026, and it also powers Muse.

Meta says Meta AI stays free for everyday use. Don’t mix up Muse’s paid plans with Meta One, which is a separate Meta subscription.

A simple way to think about it: use Meta AI when you want an answer or a quick chat. Use Muse when you want something done, like a booking made or an email sent.

Who can use Meta Muse?

You can use Meta Muse if you’re 18 or older, live where it’s offered and have a Meta account. As of October 2026, it’s offered in the US, Canada and Japan.

  • Country: the US (since September 8, 2026), Canada (since September 18) and Japan (since October 23). Meta hasn’t announced dates for the EU, UK, India, Australia or other places.
  • Age: 18 and over, per the Muse Terms.
  • Account: a Meta account. You can create one with Facebook, Instagram, an email address or a phone number. You don’t need Facebook or Instagram.
  • Device: iPhone or iPad on iOS 18 or later, Android, a web browser, a Mac, or WhatsApp.

TechCrunch reported that you need to add a payment card to start, even for free use. Meta’s help pages don’t say this.

What Meta’s new Muse app means for you

Muse means you can hand everyday chores to an AI that acts, not just one that talks. That can save you time, but it also means trusting Meta with more of your accounts.

The upside

  • Less busywork. Email checks, bookings and price watching can run in the background while you do other things.
  • Free to start. Among the big personal AI agents, Muse is the only one with a free tier. See how it stacks up in our guide to the best personal AI agents.
  • Lots of people use it. Sensor Tower estimates put Muse at 10 million US downloads in 40 days, TechCrunch reported. Meta hasn’t shared official numbers.

The trade-offs

  • It can make mistakes. Meta warns that Muse may take unexpected actions. Some actions, like a sent email, can’t be undone.
  • Some sites block it. Amazon has blocked Muse since September 20, 2026. Agents also can’t get past logins and SMS codes on their own.
  • Privacy takes some setup. Model training is on by default. Meta also says Muse’s browsing can still shape the ads you see on its other apps.
