Amazon Blocks Meta Muse: What Happened and What It Means
Published 6 min read
The Meta Muse Amazon story is simple: Amazon won’t let Muse shop on Amazon.com. Amazon started blocking Meta’s AI agent on September 20, 2026, less than two weeks after Muse launched.
Amazon says Muse doesn’t identify itself as an AI agent and seemed to store customer logins. Meta denies the login claim and says shoppers should get to choose their own agent. As of October 26, 2026, the block is still in place.
You can still use Muse to shop at many other stores. Our guide to shopping with Meta Muse shows how.
What changed (as of October 26, 2026):
- September 20, 2026: Amazon began blocking Muse on Amazon.com.
- September 21-23, 2026: Shopify said Muse can check out on Shopify stores, and Meta named new retail partners at Connect.
- October 17, 2026: Meta told The Verge that turning away an agent means turning away its customer.
- October 21, 2026: Walmart opened its “Agent Gateway” for approved AI agents.
- Now: no unblock, lawsuit or settlement has been reported.
Why Amazon blocked Meta Muse
Amazon says Muse broke its rules for AI agents by not identifying itself and by seeming to store customer logins. Amazon’s rules, called its Conditions of Use, added “Agent Terms” in May 2025. They require AI agents to say who they are when they visit.
The Next Web reported Amazon’s main objections:
- Meta didn’t tell Amazon before launching Muse.
- Muse doesn’t identify itself as an agent while it browses.
- Muse appears to capture and store customer credentials, meaning usernames and passwords.
Per Bloomberg, Amazon spokesperson Lara Hendrickson said “we’ve requested that Meta remove Amazon from the experience.”
She said shopping agents should “operate openly” and respect each site’s choice to take part.
Amazon said it is “in direct conversation” with Meta. It wouldn’t say whether it plans to sue.
Other possible reasons
Some writers point to money. Trending Topics, citing Forbes, noted that Amazon’s ad business brought in about $68 billion last year. Shelly Palmer argues the block protects that ad money.
That’s their analysis, not Amazon’s stated reason.
What Meta said
Meta denies that Muse can see people’s passwords and says shoppers should be free to use their own agent. Meta said Muse “has no visibility into people’s passwords or payment methods,” and that shared info stays in secure storage.
Meta also turned down Amazon’s request to remove Amazon from Muse, Bloomberg reported.
On October 17, Meta gave The Verge a sharper line. “Turning away a personal agent means turning away the customer behind it,” Meta said, as AI Weekly summarized. Meta pointed to stores that already work with Muse, like Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora and Wayfair.
Meta’s own help pages make the same claim. Meta says Muse keeps saved logins in a secure store and fills them in without the AI model seeing them. For more on how Muse handles your data, see our guide to Meta Muse privacy and safety.
What Muse users see on Amazon
When Muse tries to use Amazon.com, it gets a warning popup instead of a shopping page. Bloomberg reported that the popup says:
“Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
In practice, that means:
- Muse can’t search, compare or buy on Amazon for you.
- You can still shop on Amazon yourself, as usual.
- Muse can’t get past the popup on its own.
| Where you shop | Can Muse do it? (as of October 26, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Amazon.com | No, blocked since September 20, 2026 |
| Walmart | Yes, a Muse partner, plus Agent Gateway |
| Shopify stores | Yes, through Shop Pay |
| Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair and more | Yes, Connect partners |
Stores that work with Muse instead
Many big stores welcome Muse, including Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair and any store that uses Shopify. Meta named these partners at its Connect event in September 2026.
Here’s who works with Muse, as of October 26, 2026:
- Walmart: a named Muse partner. On October 21, Walmart launched Agent Gateway for approved agents.
- Shopify stores: Shopify’s CEO said Muse can check out with Shop Pay on Shopify stores. He said it less than a day after Amazon’s block.
- Connect partners: Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair, Ulta, Michael Kors, American Eagle, DICK’S, Fanatics and Instacart.
TechCrunch reported that Walmart’s Agent Gateway lets agents search and buy without seeing your payment info. Walmart says “Agent Profiles” arrive next month. They’ll let you require approval for each purchase or set a spending limit.
Muse also asks before every purchase, wherever you shop. To see how buying works step by step, read can Meta Muse shop for you?
Amazon isn’t the only one
Other companies limit AI agents too, according to The Verge’s roundup:
- Yelp allows only agents in its paid data program.
- Delta doesn’t work with third-party agents.
- JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab don’t let agents into customer accounts.
Will Amazon unblock Muse?
Nobody knows yet, and as of October 26, 2026, there’s no sign of a deal. We found no unblock, no lawsuit and no settlement. Amazon’s last public word was that it’s talking with Meta.
The legal picture is still forming. Amazon has a separate court fight with Perplexity over its Comet shopping agent.
In that case, an appeals court said the shopper is the one using Amazon’s site, not the AI company. Amazon’s block on Muse doesn’t rely on a court order. It relies on Amazon’s own terms.
Reports note that Amazon and Meta still work together in other areas. For example, Amazon products can be bought in Facebook and Instagram. But neither side has said a deal is coming.
What it means for you: if you mostly shop on Amazon, Muse can’t help there for now. You can still use Muse to find deals, compare prices and buy at the many stores that welcome it. Keep purchase approvals on, and watch this page for updates. To compare Muse with other shopping agents, see our list of the best personal AI agents. New to Muse? Start with what Meta Muse is.

Frequently asked questions
Can Muse still shop on Amazon?
No. Amazon has blocked Muse on Amazon.com since September 20, 2026, and the block was still in place as of October 26, 2026. When Muse tries to browse Amazon, it gets a warning popup. You can still shop on Amazon yourself, or ask Muse to use stores like Walmart, Best Buy or Shopify shops.
Is it against Amazon rules to use an AI shopping agent?
Amazon says it is, unless the agent is allowed. Since May 2025, Amazon's Conditions of Use have required AI agents to identify themselves. Amazon's popup says continued access by an unauthorized AI agent breaks those terms. Amazon hasn't said what happens to shoppers whose agents ignore it. This isn't legal advice.
