Meta's Muse AI Models Explained in Plain English
Published 7 min read
Meta Muse models, often called the Muse AI models, are the AI “brains” Meta builds to power its products. The same family runs Meta AI, Meta’s chat assistant, and Meta Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent app.
The names can get confusing, so this guide sorts them out in plain English.
- Muse is the app.
- Muse Spark and Muse Wonder are models.
- Muse Code is a coding tool for developers.
What changed (as of October 26, 2026):
- October 12, 2026: Meta announced Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, its first frontier-class models. Frontier means built to compete with the top AI models.
- October 15, 2026: Meta released Muse Spark Open, a large model anyone can download and run.
- Right now: the Muse app still runs on Muse Spark. Meta says Wonder will “soon” power the app, subscribers first.
Meta’s new AI models explained
Meta’s Muse models are a family of AI models from Meta Superintelligence Labs, first launched in April 2026. A model is the part of an AI product that understands your request and writes the answer. Apps like Muse and Meta AI are built on top of models.
Here’s every Muse model and tool Meta has named so far:
| Name | Released | What it is | Where you can use it | Open-weight? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muse Spark | April 8, 2026 | Meta’s first Muse model | Meta AI, the Muse app | No |
| Muse Code | Beta since August 5, 2026 | A coding agent, not a model | Developers’ terminals | Not a model |
| Muse Glimmer | About August 10, 2026 | A small model, about 30B parameters | Download it, run it yourself | Yes (Apache 2.0) |
| Muse Spark 1.3 | September 2, 2026 | Spark update, better at agent and coding tasks | Muse Code, Meta Model API | No |
| Muse Wonder | October 12, 2026 | Meta’s first frontier-class model | Meta Model API, Muse Code | No |
| Muse Wonder Full | October 12, 2026 | A stronger version of Wonder | Muse Code subscribers | No |
| Muse Spark Open | October 15, 2026 | A large open-weight model | Download it, or use it through cloud hosts | Yes (Muse Model License) |
A few terms help here:
- Open-weight means Meta publishes the model files, so anyone can download and run the model on their own computers.
- Parameters are the numbers a model learns during training. More parameters usually means a bigger, more capable model.
- Meta Model API is how developers plug Meta’s models into their own apps.
What is Meta Muse Spark?
Muse Spark is Meta’s first Muse model and the one that powers the Muse app today. Meta launched it on April 8, 2026, inside Meta AI at meta.ai and the Meta AI app. Meta’s Spark announcement describes it as built to handle more than text, with reasoning and tool use.
For versions, benchmarks and API details, see our full Muse Spark guide.
TechCrunch describes Spark as a lightweight, fast model. That makes it a good fit for an agent that runs many small steps. Meta’s Muse launch post says the app is “powered by Muse Spark.”
Muse Spark 1.3
Meta released Muse Spark 1.3 on September 2, 2026, a week before the Muse app launched. Meta’s Spark 1.3 post says it’s better at agent and coding work.
Meta says it uses about 20% fewer tool calls and 25% fewer tokens than the version before. Tokens are small chunks of text that models read and write.
Meta hasn’t said which exact Spark version the free Muse app uses.
Muse Spark Open
Muse Spark Open is a big open-weight model Meta released on October 15, 2026. Meta’s Spark Open post gives these details:
- 816 billion parameters in total, with 42 billion active at a time.
- A 1 million token context, meaning it can take in a very long document or chat at once.
- Available on Hugging Face and big cloud platforms, including Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.
- Released under the Muse Model License, which has limited commercial terms.
Meta calls it “the most capable US open-weight model to date.”
Sources don’t say if it’s the same model as the Spark in Meta’s apps.
Muse Glimmer
Muse Glimmer is Meta’s small open-weight model, released around August 10, 2026. It has about 30 billion parameters and uses the Apache 2.0 license, which lets almost anyone use it. Artificial Analysis noted it was Meta’s first open-weight release since Llama 4.
Meta Muse Wonder vs GPT-6
There’s no clear winner between Muse Wonder and GPT-6. Meta’s own charts put Muse Wonder Full ahead of GPT-6 Astra on agent tasks. An independent score puts them close. No independent head-to-head test shows a clear winner as of October 2026.
What Muse Wonder is
Meta announced Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on October 12, 2026. Meta built them around two ideas it calls “Active Memory” and “Active Focus.”
- Muse Wonder is available through the Meta Model API and Muse Code.
- Muse Wonder Full is for Muse Code subscribers.
- In the Muse app, Meta says Wonder “will soon power experiences,” starting with subscribers. We couldn’t confirm it’s live in the app yet.
TechCrunch reported that Wonder’s API price is $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.
What GPT-6 is
GPT-6 is OpenAI’s newest model family. GPT-6 Astra launched on September 3, 2026, and GPT-6 Sol and Luna followed on September 22. All ChatGPT users got GPT-6 on October 7 and 8.
How they compare
| Source | Who ran it | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Meta’s “Personal Superintelligence Index” | Meta | Wonder Full 59.1, Claude Opus 5.5 55.2, GPT-6 Astra 54.5, Wonder 54.3 |
| AutomationBench-AA | Reported in Meta’s charts | Wonder Full 45.4, GPT-6 Astra 41.6 |
| ProgramBench (coding) | Reported in Meta’s charts | Wonder Full 59.0, Claude Opus 5.5 70.5 |
| Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index | Independent | Claude Opus 5.5 58, Wonder Full 56, GPT-6 Astra 53 |
The Meta chart figures and the independent index both come from OfficeChai’s report. TechCrunch reported that Meta’s model card calls Wonder “comparable to” GPT-6 Astra.
So Meta’s charts favor Wonder Full on agent tasks, but it trails on coding. The independent index puts Wonder Full just ahead of Astra and behind Claude Opus 5.5. A few points on one index isn’t a clear win.
Meta Muse Code coding agent
Muse Code is a coding agent that developers run in a terminal, not an AI model. A terminal is the text window programmers use to type commands. Muse Code reads and writes code for you there.
TechCrunch reported that Meta launched Muse Code in beta on August 5, 2026, built for large code bases. It now runs on Meta’s newer models, including Muse Wonder. Wonder Full is only for Muse Code subscribers.
Muse Code has its own subscription plans, separate from the Muse app’s Power and Maximum plans. Meta’s Muse Code docs list Everyday, High, Power and Maximum usage tiers. The docs don’t show prices, and we couldn’t confirm them as of October 2026.
If you’re not a developer, you can skip Muse Code. The Muse agent app is the product built for everyday tasks.
What it means for you
For most people, the model name matters less than what the app can do. Here’s the short version:
- Using the Muse app? It runs on Muse Spark today. Meta says Wonder is coming, subscribers first. Our Meta Muse pricing guide covers what subscribers get.
- Choosing between Muse and ChatGPT? Both now run on new models, and benchmarks don’t settle it. Compare the apps in Meta Muse vs ChatGPT.
- Looking at other agents? See our list of the best personal AI agents.
- A developer? Muse Spark Open and Muse Glimmer are downloadable, and Wonder is on Meta’s API.
